1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When looking at creating a documentary certain codes and conventions needed to be looked at, in order to make it look professional. Facts and figures were needed to back up what the documentary was saying. And within our documentary, emergency stop, this was portrayed in the voice-over throughout the documentary. There was a clear and distinctive voice-over throughout the documentary linking important and relevant points together. This created a story like feel that the audience could easily follow. The voice-over was important because it set a clear narrative in telling our story to the audience.

We found out that the cutaways we used within our documentary were as important as the voice-over we used, as without these the documentary wouldn’t be as interesting and people would lose interest immediately. We felt that some of the cutaways used were important as they got the audience involved with the documentary itself, in some, they felt like they were in the car driving, therefore this enabled them to feel connected with the documentary. They gave the impression that the audience were in the driver’s seat; therefore this may enable them to get more interested in doing their driving lessons.

Reconstructions were also used within our documentary, to highlight different parts of driving. They gave that idea of what it’s like to drive. It also gave them the element of the first hand feel, without actually being behind the wheel of a car. It also gave that aspect of an info-tainment like feel within our documentary.

The graphics used to illustrate interviews were simple, yet informative. They told the audience who the person being interviewed was, and how they were relevant to the documentary itself. We used the colour because we did intense research before making our documentary to find out what people actually like; therefore we asked the question, what’s your favourite colour? And the majority of people said it was blue so this was clear to us that the graphics needed to be blue, to get our target audience interested.

The framing of our interviews was crucial, the framing of each interview had to be consisted throughout the documentary therefore they all needed to be the same. We framed each interview 1/3 down the screen. This would then give it a more professional look as all documentaries I had previously watched were framed like this.

Underneath certain parts of the documentary, a music bed was added to keep the audience’s attention. The music we used was relevant to our documentary, all songs were about driving or cars and this was important as it kept with the theme of our documentary. We chose ‘baby you can drive my car, the Beatles’ ‘Cars, Gary Newman’ ‘Shut up and drive, Rihanna’ and ‘ jcb song, nizlopi’ we decided to use all of these songs because they would appeal to our target audience but they would also appeal to the older market too. Therefore people who were of the older generation who wanted to learn to drive could also watch this documentary. We needed to use fresh songs that people would know and by using music from an artist like Rihanna would appeal to the younger market whilst the other songs used within the documentary would again appeal the a different viewer.


Mise-en-scene of our documentary was vitally important in keeping the audience’s attention, we decided to interview a driving instructor inside his instructor car, and we did this because we wanted to give that friendly feeling about him that people don’t need to feel scared when wanting to learn to drive, because it’ll be a calm friendly atmosphere. We also used a blue screen; this enabled us to add whatever we wanted, and gave us total control, instead of just have the interview in a set place.

Throughout making the title sequence for the documentary, we thought of numerous things in what we could use. But eventually we decided that having a montage of cars would suit our documentary more, and this would entice the audience into watching it. The photos of cars appeared one by one to create this massive collage of cars after this a car would drive to the screen and the title ‘Emergency Stop’ would be on the licence plate. This enabled us to be different and the make a title sequence that people would remember and enjoy. Straight after the title appeared a clip of a car driving over the Runcorn Bridge; having this after our titles would keep the audience’s attention making them want to watch more. Again the music beds, underneath the titles were vitally important as this would set mood for the audience. It would then appeal not to just our target audience but to a wider audience.

Whilst filming out documentary, we decided to film vox-pops. We did this to find out what ordinary people thought about driving and their own views on the matter. So we asked generic questions about driving to find their opinions. We learnt about many people first cars, in which we could incorporate into our documentary. We felt that vox-pops were needed to make it look more professional, these would then give that element that people could relate to because they were ordinary people.

When gathering Archive footage we decided to chose something relevant, something that our target audience could in theory relate to. Therefore we decided to use clips from the show Top Gear and Final Destination 3. Both these incorporated ideas within our documentary. Top Gear enabled us to show what people were influenced by when buying or amending their cars. And final destination 3 involved a crash involving teenagers. This showed the bad sides of what driving could cause, to show that some people could be immature when driving and not focusing on their surroundings. We chose both clips, because they would create this element of info-tainment for the audience, both clips were modern and fresh in people’s minds so it made it a lot more relatable.When looking at the print advert in which we made we had to look at the specific codes and conventions for these set pieces. In order to gain a valuable and professional looking product we needed to look at what actual professional products looked like, in order to gain some insight into what we needed to do. As I looked at different products I learnt that my product needed to have specific things within it. It needed a central in which the audience would notice when looking at the product, it needed to be something related to the documentary itself so we decided to use the learner plate. I found out that all print adverts I looked at all had this one central image. They all had the channel logo on it, so this was a vital part of my print advert, this enabled people to understand what the channel was on, it then also looked more professional as it had a well known logo within itself. The print advert itself didn't really challenge the codes and conventions of print adverts, it was more to do with conforming with what others looked like however it had our own touch on it, as we were able to design it our self

Again with the radio trailer, this didn't really challenge the original codes and conventions. We made a advert that would be catchy and what people would remember. Having this meant that people would know it was an advert, which could be played on the radio. Essentially we had to make it appeal to our target audience so that they would eventually watch the documentary after they'd heard the advert. We then used clips from the original documentary it order to link them both together and having this meant that they could relate to what the products had to offer. I ended up listening to other radio adverts in order to get some inspiration of what my documentary could consist of. All radio adverts that I listened to consisted of the time, day and channel in which the documentary would be shown on, but also the slogan that went along with it, which would essentially drawn the audience in, with its snappy and rememberable slogan.

Audience Feedback

After completing all 3 products, we needed to get audience feedback in order to figure out where we went wrong and what we could have improved on. Being able to find out these things helped us learn from what we did, therefore if we did another project like this we wouldn't make the same mistakes we did the first time round.

Looking at what people said about my documentary, radio advert and print advert I've learnt a lot of valuable information when making documentaries. And if I was to do it again, I would change a lot of things, I'd have things set out ready so the making of my documentary would run smoothly.

Below are a few images of audience feedback in order for me to learn at what I could have done better, and what things people thought were good and very informative.



I decided to get feedback from relative new media technologies, such as facebook, youtube and msn. All these things are aimed at our target audience and I felt that this was important in getting the feedback we wanted. I felt that using such new media technologies as these, it would be highly suitable, not only beacuase my target audience used such things but that it was the easiest form of getting thigns across. Most people have access to the internet whether at home or not, so distributing it on such means meant that a wider audience could watch and also comment on what I have produced.


The following questions were asked in order to gain myself feedback from my target audience, these questions help me gather a clear understanding of what people thought about the 3 ancilliary texts I had produced.

After getting the feedback, I was able to understand what I had done wrong but also what I had done good, by using these methods, I found that people were happy to give me feedback because of easy to use method of viewing. Therefore using such technologies helped me gain a non biased feedback, because people were able to comment on how they actually felt.

Newspaper Advertisement Production

Creating a suitable print advert would be hard work, we have to look the specific codes and conventions of print adverts, to gain this knowledge of what our official poster would consist of. We found out that, one main focus image is needed as we don't want to detract attention to what the actual documentary is about.

Therefore we decided to use a ripped L plate, in order to signify that this documentary was about driving, but not just about learner drivers. It had a more broader audience in which it could appeal too. Even though our main focus was for teenagers, we thought that it would be suitable for all ages who may be learning to drive. Thus making this poster as broad as we could, might attract not only young drivers but anyone person who is in process of learning to drive.

First of all, creating a layer for the poster was the first main thing we needed to do, we placed white background as a simple start, copied our focus picture onto this background and cut it out so all that you could see were a pair of hands and the ripped L plate. We decided to do this because we didn't want the background of the photo to distract our audiences attention.

After this, we decided to play about with the background changing it to black, and increasing the size of our main photo. We also had a little play about with text, to see what our poster could actually look like.
At this point, we had played around with our print advert, but this wasn't finished here, we also had to add the Channel 4 logo onto our documentary, to show what channel this would be broadcast on, and the time and date was also an important part of our print advert. As it would enable people to tune in, if they wanted to watch this documentary.

In making this final practice poster, we had to make sure each layer was in a specific place in order for the poster to turn out the way we wanted, and that we didn't want things to be out of place this would then start to make the poster unprofessional and we didn't want that.



After clear discussion, we finally decided on a slogan and a specific colour scheme to make our poster look more official. We moved the title and date and time to the bottom left hand side, but we also moved our slogan next to it. This enabled us to produced an official like poster for our docmentary.

Drafting Newspaper Advertisement

Here we decided on what our print advert would look like, we decided that we would use a learner plate which is ripped up, being held by both a man and a woman. This mean that it would give the impression that both men and women do actually drive, and its not just a one sex thing.

Recording and Editing of Radio Trailer


Whilst doing our project one thing we needed to do was to record a radio advert for our documentary, this meant that we had to use specific things to link all 3 of our products together. When making the radio advert we decided that it would be best if we used the same voice over as we did in our documentary. This would then link the documentary and the radio advert together. We needed to keep this advert simple but informative. Grabbing people's attention would be essential in advertising our documentary. Therefore we used vox-pops from our documentary within our radio advert to again link it.

We also decided to cut out sound effects from clips we used within our documentary itself, the archive footage we used enabled us to get actual car sound effects which we could then incorporate into our documentary radio trailer.

We also had to include the title, slogan, time and date and also the channel. This would inform the audience and it would give them all relevant information about the documentary. This was another essential part of our advert because if this wasn't shown, people would have no idea therefore wouldn't watch the documentary.

Codes And Conventions of Radio Trailers

Within radio advert relitively simple audio is used to sell the prduct. The same voiceover is used which was used within the documentary, therefore this would link both together.
The radio advert is clear and specfic, stating the title of the docmentary, the slogan, the channel its shown on and the time its being shown.
Underneath the voiceover there is a simple music bed, which is related to the topic of the documentary, to again this would link both products together.
Also, vox-pops and relivant pieces of information used within the documentary can be used within the radio advert.

Voiceover Recording

Recording the voice was tough work, we had to come up with a script, find someone who would appeal to our target audience. But once this was done, we watched our documentary and found out whereabouts we could place this voice-over. Once we found the places in which we could put the voice-over, we cut a lot of the script so it would over power the audience, that there wasn't so much of a voice-over within our documentary.
After we cut everything out we were able to record our voice-over and add it to our documentary, completing our final product.

Scripting Voiceover

Whilst looking over our script for our voice-over, we decided to gather all relevant information together, set it up as our script then remove certain bits, bits we didn't necessarily need. Thus creating a smaller more structured voice-over. As we didn't actually want the voice-over to dominate over the documentary. We felt that we only needed sort catchy pieces of information in order to get the audience interested in our documentary.

The bits highlighted in red, are the bits we eventually decided to use within our documentary, we felt that having these bits informed the audience with the relevant statistics and relevant information needed, without over filling their brains with irrelevant information.

Over 1,600,000 people drive each year, that’s just over 4300 a day. There are a number of driving schools in which a person could learn, therefore it’s hard to choose the best; do you go for the label of AA? Or do you go for the simple opinion of the cheapest? This is the question on every learner drivers mind. This would then determine the quality you’d receive. Many young people would go for which is cheapest but does this mean you’re getting the best quality.

Once you’ve passed your test, the idea of getting your first car is exciting, do you get a Ford, Peugeot, Citroen, Toyota, smart car? The possibilities are endless. Even though the idea of getting your first car is exciting, which car would you go for?

Would you go for with pimping out your ride? Or getting a car that goes fast. Many young drivers are influenced by the shows they watch, Top Gear for example. Or just by seeing other people’s cars. Therefore there is immense pressure on young people to get a car which they won’t be mocked for.

The idea of petrol and the cost of learning and insurance would put people off, learning to drive and the amount of people on the road, which causes congestion, and also the price of parking. All these factors build up in a young person’s mind and how they would pay for using such luxury.

The minimum amount a person would pay for the running of their car could be £2,176 on standing charges per year, and this could exceed £11,422

Editing


During the editing process, we were able to gain a more broader knowledge of Premier Pro, this then enabled us to gather and create better images within our documentary, whether it was the framing of different interviews, or to cutting certain things down.

On the screen grab below, it shows a double video screen, we had this to show the different shots and interviews in which we could use. We used this because we wanted to see which parts we could slot next to a specific interview. Thus this feature was highly important.
This next screen grab, show off the idea of zooming in and out, and framing an interview correctly. We were able to increase or decrease the zoom to make sure that the interviewee was in shot and that framing was sufficient enough to be placed within our documentary.

Once we'd gotten the framing right, we had to listen to what the interviewee had said in order to gather and put specific archive footage or cutaways within or just after what they said. This however would depend on what the interviewee had said.

This screen grab below shows the ability a blue screen can hold, we were able to make a collage of photo's to put behind it, so it didn't look so simple and plain. This background therefore significant to what our documentary was about.

Film Log

Here we have logged everything we have filmed for our documentary.

On the 25th of October we Interviewed Simon he plays the key role in helping the learner drivers pass their theory test. we also interviewed Alex Staz who is a learner driver to get his views on driving.

On the 27th of October we filmed the voxpops for our documentary in Warrington Town Centre, we asked genertic questions about driving and interviewed both learner and older drivers. This was because we wanted to get both sides of the equation, this meant that we were able to see what both young and old people thought about driving and how their tests were different.

On the 28th of October we filmed an interview wth a parent we also filmed a reconstruction of somebody driving for example in there practical driving test.

On 2nd of November we Interviewed the Deputy Head Teacher of Priestley College, and asked him questions about the Theory driving course held at the college and how he feels this has benefited the students. On this day we also interviewed Jemma Williams a tutor at Priestley College, we also asked her generic questions about driving, ranging from what car she drives at the moment.

The 3rd of November we Interviewed Natalie and Pauline Berry, an older driver and a learner driver this way we can compare them both, and how they have different opinions about driving. We decided to film both a young and old driver because we wanted to gather a clear understanding at what they both thought and how again they were taught differently.

On the 5th of November we filmed a lot of cutaways including traffic lights, moving cars, indicators, wheels, car number plates, bus moving and indicating, cars turning, learner cars driving, close ups of 'L' plates.

On the 8th of November we Interviewed a Driving Instructor, also we filmed some cuts aways of driving and different manoeuvres for a learner driver and we filmed on the dashboard through the window on the driving journey because this could also be used as a reconstruction or cutaway. We did this as it would make the audience more involved with the documentary, like they were actually in the car.

On Wednesday 10th November we interviewed Leesa Whitby we asked her different questions related to her driving. We also did a cutaway of her reading the highway code, this could then be used when and if another interviewee spoke about learning the highway code.

On the 14th November, we filmed a cutaway of a reconstruction to a hazard perception test, filming this would give us an insight of what people have to do when taking their driving test. This would have been used as a cutaway within our documentary.

On the 15th November, we filmed the opening to our documentary, we used a variety of different cars, which would soon pop up one-by-one creating this massive montage of cars. This meant that we were able to create our opening titles.
